C'est pendant ces années que Welch a commencé à jouer des chansons originales en plus des chansons traditionnelles folk et bluegrass qu'elle écoutait depuis son enfance. En 1996, le duo commence tout juste à faire des tournées régulières à travers le pays. C'est à Nashville, alors qu'ils font la première partie de Peter Rowan, qu'ils sont repérés par le légendaire producteur T-Bone Burnett. Cela mènera à la création de leur premier album Revival, qui, avec l'album suivant Time (The Revelator), remportera le Grammy du meilleur album folk contemporain. Welch sera ensuite producteur associé et interprète sur la bande originale du film des frères Coen, O Brother Where Art Thou, qui deviendra disque de platine et recevra un Grammy pour l'album de l'année en 2002.
