Lynyrd Skynyrd est un groupe de rock américain connu pour avoir popularisé le genre rock sudiste dans les années 1970. Formé à l'origine en 1964 sous le nom de My Backyard à Jacksonville, en Floride, le groupe a également été connu sous des noms tels que The Noble Five et One Percent, avant de se décider pour "Lynyrd Skynyrd" en 1969. Le groupe a acquis une renommée mondiale grâce à ses performances live et à ses chansons phares "Sweet Home Alabama" et "Free Bird". Au sommet de son succès, trois de ses membres sont décédés dans un accident d'avion en 1977, mettant fin abruptement à l'incarnation la plus populaire du groupe. Le groupe a vendu 28 millions d'albums aux États-Unis. Les membres survivants du groupe se sont reformés en 1987 pour une tournée de retrouvailles avec le chanteur principal Johnny Van Zant, le frère cadet du chanteur principal et fondateur Ronnie Van Zant. Lynyrd Skynyrd continue de tourner et d'enregistrer avec le cofondateur Gary Rossington, Johnny Van Zant et le guitariste Rickey Medlocke - qui a d'abord écrit et enregistré avec le groupe de 1971 à 1972 (avant son retour au sein de Lynyrd Skynyrd en 1996). Un autre membre fondateur Larry Junstrom, ainsi que les membres des années 70 Ed King et Artimus Pyle, restent actifs dans la musique mais ne tournent ou n'enregistrent plus avec le groupe. Le batteur Michael Cartellone enregistre et tourne avec Lynyrd Skynyrd en tant que batteur principal depuis 1999. Lynyrd Skynyrd a été intronisé au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame le 13 mars 2006.
