The Specials est un groupe anglais de 2 Tone et de ska formé à Coventry en 1977. Trois ans plus tard, en 1980, le groupe obtient son premier succès au Royaume-Uni avec Too Much Too Young, le titre principal de leur EP The Special AKA Live ! L'année suivante, le single Ghost Town, sur le thème du chômage, atteint également la première place du UK Singles Chart. Le groupe a ensuite sorti sept singles consécutifs dans le Top 10 britannique entre 1979 et 1981, mais son succès a pris fin brusquement lorsque trois de ses membres ont quitté le groupe pour former Fun Boy Three. La formation restante a été remaniée de manière substantielle et, en 1984, elle a sorti de nouveaux titres, dont le single Free Nelson Mandela, qui s'est classé dans le Top 10. Cependant, c'était la fin des Specials, car le fondateur et auteur-compositeur Jerry Dammers a dissous le groupe plus tard cette année-là, pour se consacrer à l'activisme politique. Le groupe est revenu en 1993 sous le nom de The Special AKA, et a continué à se produire avec des formations différentes (sans Dammers).
