Otis Ray Redding Jr. (9 septembre 1941 - 10 décembre 1967) est un chanteur, auteur-compositeur, producteur de disques, arrangeur et découvreur de talents américain. Il est considéré comme l'un des plus grands chanteurs de l'histoire de la musique populaire américaine et un artiste majeur de la soul music et du rhythm and blues. Son style de chant a influencé de nombreux autres artistes soul des années 1960. De son vivant, ses enregistrements ont été produits par Stax Records, basé à Memphis, Tennessee, et illustrent le son de Stax. Le 9 décembre 1967, Otis Redding se produit dans l'émission de variétés musicales Upbeat, diffusée à Cleveland. Cette nuit-là, il joue deux fois au Leo's Casino. Le lendemain, Otis et son groupe doivent se produire dans la boîte de nuit Factory à Madison, dans le Wisconsin. À l'époque, Otis Redding et son groupe se déplacent entre les spectacles à bord de son Beechcraft Model 18. Par un temps brumeux et glacial, le 10 décembre 1967, le pilote de l'avion demande par radio d'atterrir à Traux Field, à Madison. Peu de temps après, l'avion s'écrase dans le lac Monona, à seulement 5 km de la piste d'atterrissage. L'accident fait 7 morts sur les 8 personnes à bord, le trompettiste Ben Cauley étant le seul survivant. Otis Redding a 26 ans au moment de l'accident.
