Avec Elvis Costello et Graham Parker, Joe Jackson était l'un des trois grands "Angry Young Men" du mouvement punk/new wave de la fin des années 70. Ses premiers enregistrements avec son groupe (qui porte son nom) reflètent ce genre et ses paroles lui ont valu d'être étiqueté comme "en colère". Après la dissolution de son groupe après Beat Crazy en 1980 (le bassiste Graham Maby est resté avec lui), il a enregistré des albums reflétant des genres différents et moins rock comme Day and Night, Body and Soul, et surtout Jumpin' Jive, une collection de reprises de morceaux de swing classiques. Au fil des ans, Jackson a continué à pousser son son dans différentes directions et enregistre encore de nouvelles musiques à ce jour.
