James Joseph Croce (10 janvier 1943 - 20 septembre 1973) est un auteur-compositeur-interprète américain de folk et de rock. Entre 1966 et 1973, Croce a sorti cinq albums studio et de nombreux singles. Il est mort tragiquement, avec cinq autres personnes, dans un accident d'avion le 20 septembre 1973, alors qu'il était au sommet de sa popularité. Il a percé en 1972 ; son troisième album You Don't Mess Around with Jim a produit trois singles à succès, dont "Time in a Bottle", qui est devenu numéro 1 après sa mort. L'album suivant, Life and Times, contenait la chanson "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown", qui a été le seul numéro 1 de son vivant. La veille de la sortie du premier single de son cinquième album, I Got a Name, Croce et son partenaire auteur-compositeur Muehleisen sont tués.
