Les Dropkick Murphys sont probablement l'un des groupes de punk celtique les plus connus. Ils se sont formés à Quincy, dans le Massachusetts, dans l'agglomération de Boston, et sont depuis lors fortement liés à cette ville. La formation initiale était composée du chanteur principal Mike McColgan, du bassiste/chanteur Ken Casey, du guitariste Rick Barton et du batteur Jeff Erna, qui a été remplacé par Matt Kelly au bout d'un an environ. Leur style est fortement influencé par des groupes comme The Clash, The Pogues, The Dubliners, Greenland Whalefishers et Ramones. Les membres du groupe citent aussi souvent AC/DC comme une forte influence. Dropkick Murphys a un son distinct qui combine le Hardcore, le Punk, les mélodies vocales de la musique folklorique irlandaise ancienne et des instruments comme la cornemuse, l'accordéon et le tin whistle. Même s'ils sont mieux décrits comme un groupe de Punk celtique, leurs premiers travaux sont parfois classés comme Oi ! et leurs albums plus récents conservent aussi une partie de l'ADN de Oi ! Beaucoup de leurs chansons maintiennent la combinaison d'instruments à haute intensité, de chants forts et de commentaires sociaux clairs. Le groupe s'exprime également sur le plan politique et est connu pour son soutien à la classe ouvrière et aux causes syndicales. Tous les t-shirts des Dropkick Murphys sont fabriqués par des syndicats aux États-Unis. En 2005, les Dropkick Murphys ont sorti un CD de deux chansons pour la famille d'un sergent du corps des Marines américain tué en Irak. En 2014, le groupe a joué une performance spéciale lors de la cérémonie commémorative du major Michael Donahue, tué en Afghanistan. Leur dernier album, 11 Short Stories of Pain & Glory, aborde fortement la question de la dépendance aux opiacés. Le groupe porte le nom de John E. "Dropkick" Murphy, lutteur du Massachusetts et propriétaire d'un centre de réhabilitation pour alcooliques. Les Dropkick Murphys ont été à un moment donné interdits de concert à Boston le jour de la Saint-Patrick après que des fans mineurs se soient introduits dans leur spectacle. Ce fait est mentionné en plaisantant dans la chanson Going Out in Style.
